Mechanical Performance Factor Development for HVAC System Performance

Document Number: PNNL-32140
Document Type: Technical Support Document
Publication Date:

Total System Performance Ratio (TSPR) is a metric for evaluating overall system efficiency instead of individual component efficiency, a solution that could also eventually facilitate the transition to a 100% performance-based code structure. TSPR is a ratio that compares the annual heating and cooling load of a building to the annual energy consumed by the building's HVAC system. This technical documentation provides background on the TSPR and support for the mechanical performance factors that are developed each 90.1 edition cycle to be used in the calculation. The current factors are developed for the 2022 edition of 90.1 in combination with addendum AG.

Enhancing Resilience in Buildings Through Energy Efficiency

Document Number: PNNL-32727 Rev. 1
Document Type: Reports and Studies
Publication Date:

The Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Building Technologies Office (BTO) recognizes the need to better understand the relationship between energy efficiency and resilience, including the need for standardized metrics, establishment of evaluation methods, and impact assessment for residential and commercial buildings. To address these needs, BTO commissioned three national research laboratories to develop a standardized methodology to quantitatively assess how energy-efficiency measures affect building thermal resilience. The study builds on previous BTO efforts to identify resilience metrics and outstanding analytical needs. It was completed under the guidance of a technical advisory group comprised of industry experts and representatives experienced in building resilience. This report summarizes the research effort conducted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, reports initial findings resulting from the efficiency- resilience valuation effort, and identifies areas of need for continued research and analysis.

Energy and Energy Cost Savings Analysis of the 2021 IECC for Commercial Buildings

Document Number: PNNL-32816
Document Type: Analysis
Publication Date:

This report provides an assessment as to whether new buildings constructed to the commercial energy efficiency provisions of the 2021 IECC would save energy and energy costs as compared to the 2018 IECC. The Commercial Energy Efficiency chapter in the 2021 IECC allows users to either follow the provisions in the IECC or use Standard 90.1-2019 as an alternative compliance path. As such, PNNL also compared the energy performance of the 2021 IECC with the corresponding Standard 90.1-2019 to help states and local jurisdictions make informed decisions regarding model code adoption.
